During the discussion, Jon identified several key strengths of UK manufacturing, including a strong focus on technology, a capable and resourceful workforce, and a rich tradition of apprenticeship programs. Despite these strengths, Jon pointed out significant challenges at the highest levels of leadership within the country. He notes a lack of understanding and appreciation for industry among top decision-makers, highlighting the need for leadership that is more attuned to the realities of global manufacturing and business acumen. “Leadership in this country isn't driving our industry forward, and they don't seem to understand it” Jon commented.
As a solution to these challenges, Jon advocates for greater collaboration with overseas manufacturers, particularly in countries like the United States, Germany and China, where a strong focus on business and technology has propelled industry forward. He suggests forging partnerships that benefit both parties and leveraging the expertise and resources available globally to drive innovation and growth in the UK manufacturing sector.
